Yom Ha'atzma'ut

In honour of Yom Ha'atzma'ut, Israel's 62nd birthday, please join us after Shabbat services and kiddush on April 17 to celebrate Israel's accomplishments.

Our guest speaker, Joan O'Callaghan, will speak on ‘Improving Lives the World Over Through Israeli Innovation’. Joan is a professor at OISE/U of T, a writer, and co-founder of the Speakers Action Group, which maintains a roster of over 50 speakers on subjects ranging from the Holocaust to Israel.

There is a lot of buzz about this topic due to the recent release of the book Start-Up Nation – Story of Israel's Economic Miracle by Dan Senor and Saul Singer.

April 26 update: We now have a transcript of this talk

An Evening with an Israeli King

On Saturday, February 6, 2010, after Shabbat at 7:30 p.m., UJA Federation is hosting what promises to be an entertaining event held at TanenbaumCHAT's Kimel Family Education Centre on the Lebovic Campus in Vaughan (9600 Bathurst Street).

Billed as "An Evening with an Israeli King", the program features Omri Casspi of the National Basketball Association's Sacramento Kings, the first Israeli ever drafted in the first round of the NBA draft and one of the leading rookies in the league this year!

It's an evening that will allow us to demonstrate our love for, and our pride in, not only this incredible athlete who overcame overwhelming odds to play in the NBA, but for the Jewish State, and our common heritage. The event will also feature a short address from Amir Gissin, the Israel's Consul General.

And what would a Jewish event be without complimentary refreshments, games for young and older kids, and much, much, more.

For more information, please call Michelle at UJA at 416.631.5685, or see the UJA page for Omri Casspi

Makom

We are very excited to announce the congregation's participation in the MAKOM/Israel Youth Emissary Synagogue initiative of UJA Federation. In partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel, UJA Federation has pioneered a program that we hope will play a crucial role in helping our youth-and the rest of us!-connect to an important part of our Jewish identity: Israel. The MAKOM Young Emissary initiative invites carefully selected Israeli youth, prior to their military service, to work within our synagogue community. In addition to UJA Federation funding, this program has been very generously supported by a significant donation from the estate of Ilonka Seder Szabolcsi.

The First Narayever will be partnering with the Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School (DJDS) and the Downtown Jewish Community School (DJCS) in this one year program, beginning at the end of August 2010. In February, Rabbi Elkin and our synagogue president, Julia Gluck selected our two schlichim during a 3-day workshop and selection process in Israel. We hope our two selected schlichim will add even more passion and excitement to the work already being done by our wonderful synagogue teen leaders, acting as role models and mentors for them, as well as engaging in new programming with a focus on Israel, holidays and working with our youth. They will be guided by our Youth Co-ordinator, Rabbi Miriam Margles and Rabbi Ed Elkin. A small sub-committee of the Board will oversee the implementation of this initiative.

The synagogue and our co-sponsor schools are responsible for the welfare of our youth emissaries during their stay in Toronto, including accommodation. Six host families will be needed to board our two youth emissaries during the year (each emissary will be hosted by three families). If you are interested in hearing more about this program and might consider volunteering to be a host, please email Karen and Sid at Israel@narayever.ca.
